don't be -10 degree weather, gus

We're not trying to repel people from even trying us out... or are we?

Let me tell you something about -10 degree windchills, Reader. They very quickly discourage... well... ANYONE from wanting to walk out the door.

Myself included. I did not want to be the Grocery Gatherer today, but I did it anyway. For necessity purposes.

Not saying I want to repeat the experience, just saying I'm learning a very important writing lesson from it.

I, in all my royal princess-y-ness, do not vibe with -10 degree weather. Every fiber in my being goes, "No, thank you. I'll curl up under three blankets with a book, a K-Drama, or some tea."

Other people I know see -10 degree windchills, ice, and snow, and say, "SNOWBOARDING!!!" (Could not be me, but to each his own.)

Books are a lot like weather. (weird analogy, but stay with me.)

Different people have very different temperatures they're comfortable at. Temperatures they love or hate.

We'll define a book's "temperature" as its overall vibe. Because, let's be real, that's how most readers choose a book. If they're not vibing, they're not reading.

Your book should be doing 2 things:

  1. Attracting people who love living at your temperature.
  2. Repelling people who hate your temperature.

This is why I advocate so strongly for being confident in who you are as a writer! The more confident you are about what you love writing, the easier it is for others to identify your weather and travel along with you.

For me, the best weather includes strong male leads (with a hint of morally grey), damsels in distress, and alllllllll the immaculate fairytale vibes.

Hence why I'm writing A Tale of Blood and Blossoms, and VOL II DROPS MARCH 12 BUT I HAVE A PRE-ORDER LINK FOR YOU:

Other acceptable weather for me includes Suspense, a little intrigue, a little whodunit, and a whoooooole lot of romance.

What's your weather, and are you attracting the right vacationers?

Some food for thought,

Megan
